Kilwinning Scotland's Nikki Hamilton exhibited stellar technique in all
her lifts.
Commentary
by Nick Curry
On October 28, 2006 LBH was the host to the Super Metropolitan
Championships in Queens NYC. Besides the Metropolitan LWC lifters
fighting it out for titles in the senior, junior and master
categories, we had the Kilwinning Weightlifting Team of Scotland led
by masters champion Bill Despard and his son Gavin demonstrating
their talents on the competition platform. They brought athletes as
young as 9 years old to Bill at 71 and impressed all with the young
lifters’ explosive technique and fearless performances. I had yet
to see young athletes of this caliber and maturity compete, and am
sure that Scotland will be a weightlifting power in the near future.

Kilwinning Scotland's junior lifters impressed the
crowd.
Now
on to our local lifters: David Boffa, now competing in the
Metropolitan LWC, earned Outstanding Lifter Award for his gold medal
performance in the 77 kg category. Dave went 5 for 6 with lifts of
115 & 150 for an official pr of 265. Second place in the 77's
went to outstanding junior lifter Frank Murray making pr lifts of
100 & 128 for a fine 228 total.
National
competitor Pete Madow lifted as an extra in the 85's and did a nice
277 total with a close miss in the clean on his 3rd with 162. Peter
Musa lifting as an extra lifter went six for six setting personal
records of 91 & 114 for a Huge 205 total. Pete is not yet 14 and
competed around 62kg body weight. Ed Herger dominated the 105's
& came close to winning the outstanding lifter trophy with six
good lifts finishing with 135 & 165 for a 300 total. LBH's Tom
Hughes won Outstanding Master with lifts of 83 & 105 in the 94
kg class.

NYC's Bravest Honor Guard presented the colors while Ilian Despard
holds the Scottish flag and Coach Joe Triolo commentates.
Outstanding
Female athlete Ericka Dice cruised to victory on 3 good attempts
finishing with 83 & 97. Close misses with 86 & 103. Nicole
Spayd who finished out her junior years with a big personal record
total of 99 in the 58 kg category. Nicole placed second to
outstanding master JoAnn Musa who did 59 & 71 for a 130 total.
Joe Triolo was meet director and was everywhere helping the meet run
smoothly. Officials and loaders included Joanne and Artie
Drechsler, Samantha Smith, Dena Smith, Chris Smith, Len Bacino,
Gerry Dunne, JP Nicoletta, Don Nussbaum, Joel Jessonowski, and Naum
Kelmensky.

Coaches Joe Triolo and Bill Despard pose with
Kilwinning's finest.
If you have never been to a competition at LBH, you need to make an
effort to come down. The Metropolitan LWC is one of the premier LWCs
and has a long history in our fine sport.
