LBH 105+ lifter Dan Boland improves his totals every contest.

Commentary by Len Bacino

Men
The 69 kg class was dominated by American School Age Champion lifter Peter Musa, who after recovering from an elbow injury still managed to total 228kg. Peter is getting closer to a double bodyweight c&j. If you want to learn how to lift, then just watch Peter Musa. His explosive and efficient lifting technique imparted by Coach Pete Roselli is a pleasure to watch. Second place went to David Osorio in his first weightlifting contest going 5 for 6. David works as personal trainer in Manhattan and will no doubt be spreading the Olympic lifting gospel throughout the city.

The 77 kg class was won by Dave Boffa, who also won the 2007 Metropolitan Association Best Men's Lifter of the Year. Dave is coached by Nick Curry in NJ. At the Metropolitan Awards Dinner, which followed the contest, Nick mentioned that Dave is a PhD student who teaches art history at FDU in NJ. Second place went another Nick Curry lifter, the popular Lou Mangiaracina. Third place went to Mike Basciano, who is skillfully coached by former Metropolitan area lifter Mark Chasnov. Basciano has been steadily improving and along with Dominick Zanot are the backbone of Team New York. Mike Ulloa a Junior lifter coached by Chris Smith did a respectable 168kg total getting 4th in the open and 1st place as a junior. Right behind Mike was Lost Battalion Hall's Chris Matsui who made an impressive lifting debut in his first contest coming through with a big 100 kg c&j. Way to go Chris!

85 kg Peter Madow, coached by his dad and former lifting great Bob Madow, won his class with a fantastic 275 kg total that catapulted him to win the Best Male Lifter. Dominick Zanot was second with a powerful 245 total, which included 5 for 6 with a big 140 c&j that wowed the crowd. In third was LBH's John Alston.

94 kg class was won by Oskar Novakovsky, who took what he needed to win and then passed on his third attempts. The irrepressible Tom Hughes took second in the open and first in the masters, and also won Best Men's Master. What made Tom's lifting even more special was the fact that earlier this year he was battling a major illness which he successfully overcame. In fact, not only was Tom training and squatting while undergoing invasive treatment for cancer, but also Tom's was the first entry received for the 2007 American Masters. In my experience in Olympic lifting, I rate Tom as the most competitive-minded master lifter I know of -- and that's a fact! Lifting as an extra lifter, Chad Becker was without a doubt the strongest lifter in the contest, Unfortunately for Chad, he started a little too high in the snatch with 130 which he missed twice before taking 132 for his third snatch which he also missed. His snatches were all lost behind, but within his capability. What Chad missed in the snatch he made up in the c&j with a successful 150 and 157, and a close miss with 160. I believe Chad will be totaling over 300kg in the near future.

105 kg class winner was Josh Peters who came through with his big 2nd attempt c&j of 136 kg. Jeff Scott was second, and made a 93 kg personal record in the snatch. Jeff Scott was awarded the Best Men's Master Lifter Award at the Annual Metropolitan Weightlifting Association Dinner, which followed the competition.
